“The Egyptians pursued [Israel], all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the [Red] sea” (Exodus 14.9), but in the end the Lord “triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea” (15.1). Forty years later, “Jericho was shut up inside and outside” (Joshua 6.1), but their “wall fell down flat” and Israel “captured the city” (verse 20). Four hundred years later, Goliath confronted David “with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin”, but was defeated “in the name of the LORD of hosts” (1 Samuel 17.45). Indeed, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20.7).
