Regarding Babylon, Isaiah 13-14 use these words: pomp, arrogant, and pompous pride (13.11); “the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans” (13.19); insolent (14.4) and pomp (14.11); “You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’” (14.13-14). Isaiah 16 speaks of “the pride of Moab— how proud he is!— of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence; in his idle boasting he is not right” (16.6); and “the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt” (16.14). Indeed, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16.18).
