Despite popular religious opinion to the contrary, a person can in fact worship “in vain” (Mark 7.7), as Jesus indicted the Pharisees and scribes of His day. With these words, Jesus highlighted two particular ways in which our worship can be vain — in heart, and in practice. If one’s heart is not fully engaged in worship, his worship is vain, regardless of how thoroughly he might practice the commandments of God and eschew the commandments of men. Conversely, if one teaches and practices the commandments of men, “laying aside the commandment of God,” his heart is truly far from God, despite how much he might protest otherwise. “Those who worship [God] must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4.24).
