Mark 14
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
“Peter said to [Jesus], ‘Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be’” (Mark 14.29), but in the end, “he wept” (verse 72), having denied His Lord three times. How did that happen? First, his aforementioned overconfidence. Second, his inattention, i.e. his failure to watch and pray in Gethsemane (verses 32-42). Third, his misguided zeal, apparently thinking the battle physical rather than spiritual. Fourth, his aloofness from Jesus, “follow[ing] Him at a distance” (verse 54) and vulnerable. Fifth, his evil companionship, “warm[ing] himself at the fire” of Jesus’ enemies (verse 54) while the Lord was tried and abused. “Be sober, be vigilant” (1 Peter 5.8).
