And now, a minute with the Word…

In Colossians 2, Paul is addressing what seemed to be an issue among the group of Christians at Colossae. There were some people in the area who were telling them that they needed to do certain other things in order to be pleasing to God. This was an issue, not just in Colossae, but also among the region of Galatia as well. The issues here surrounded asceticism…a severe form of self discipline. These folks were going so far as to potentially do harm to their own body (Colossians 2.23). Paul tells the Colossians that is a form of self-made religion and ultimately has no value in stopping the indulgences of the flesh. However, the one who does provide value in stopping the indulgences of the flesh is Christ. Only when we consistently seek Him and grow closer to Him will we hav the power to overcome the flesh. This is a life God is pleased with and will reward. Therefore, let us not rely on ourselves or other men, but let us lean on God and look to him continually.
