And now, a minute with the Word…

Luke 9.23 captures the essence of discipleship, in five indispensable qualities. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me” — that is, true disciples of Jesus are willing, never compelled or coerced into service. Jesus continued, “Let him deny himself” — that is, true disciples are selfless. “And take up his cross” — like Jesus Himself, His disciples must be sacrificial, willing to surrender all for His sake. Further, Jesus said, “And take up his cross daily” — genuine discipleship is committed; it endures, persists, and overcomes. “And,” Jesus concluded, “Follow Me” — true disciples are focused on Jesus, nothing more or less, and everything else flows from Him.
