Luke 13
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
The parable of the barren fig tree is not a parable that I have read frequently. It is a short parable, but I think there are a couple of things that we can take from this and apply. First, the vineyard owner had had enough with his barren fig tree. He had been seeking fruit from it for 3 years and it had produced none. So, he was ready to have removed from the ground, and presumably used as kindler for a fire. Question for us: are we the barren fig tree? Has Jesus, the owner of the vineyard been coming back to us year after year and there is no fruit that has been produced? Citizens of God’s kingdom will produce fruit…if you are not producing fruit, get busy.
Secondly, the vinedresser wanted to give the tree one more year. He offered to put manure around the tree to fertilize the ground so that the tree might bear fruit. If it produced fruit, there was no need to cut it down; but if it did not, then the tree would be removed. If I see a tree in the vineyard that is not producing fruit, am I willing to do what I can to help that tree produce the fruit that is required? Let us be busy doing the works of God that he created us to do to further his kingdom (Ephesians 2.10).
