Luke 16
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
In today’s reading we have the account of the rich man and Lazarus. Much debate has occurred over the years whether this is a retelling of something that actually happened, or if this is another parable of Jesus. I simply want to call to our attention a couple of things that stand out from this account: first, the life that we have is the only opportunity that we will receive to make sure that our life is pleasing to God. There are no do-overs, and once our life has ended, we cannot change our eternal destination. Secondly, we have been given what we need to be able to live a life that is pleasing to God. The rich man was concerned for his family and thought that a warning from Lazarus would get them to change their lives. Abraham’s response was: “they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them” (Luke 16.29). We have been given everything pertaining to life and godliness and the totality of scripture can make us complete and equipped for every good work (2 Peter 1.3, 2 TImothy 3.17). Let us make sure that we are doing our very best to not only read, but live out what God has told us is pleasing to him.
