Luke 23
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Luke 23 and the other passages from Matthew, Mark, and John that cover Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross can be difficult passages to read. Not because they contain hard thoughts or because the concept is hard to grasp, but because the historical event that is contained in these pages details the death of the Son of God and the emotional weight of these passages is heavy. Think about Mary sitting by watching her son die a death he did not deserve. Think about the disciples watching their friend, mentor, and teacher die a death that he did not deserve. The sinless Son of God died and shed his blood so that I can be redeemed from my sins and my life can be made right with God. It is that very thought that also makes this passage the Good News. This is the Gospel message. Jesus the Christ died to save you and me and the whole world from sin (1 John 2.2). No matter my upbringing, no matter what deeds I have done, no matter my socioeconomic status. Unequivocally, Jesus died to save me. “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.” (1 Corinthians 1.18)
