Matthew 1
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
It is hard not to notice some of the unexpected names in this lineage. One might not expect Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, to be listed in this lineage of Christ, mostly dominated by the names of fathers. Tamar even has both of her sons listed, although only one of those sons, Perez, is actually involved in Jesus’s lineage. Perhaps Rahab and Ruth, remind us, and the original readers of non-Jewish heroes of great faith. Perhaps Tamar and Bathsheba, remind us that God‘s plans are not thwarted by broken people, and he, in fact can use broken people to accomplish amazing things. While we do not know much about Joseph, he was a just man or a righteous man and he also showed great faith by carrying out the instructions from the angel. But really this chapter, and all the chapters to follow, are all about Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, the Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. As the son of David, He is the Messiah, the King the Jews have been waiting on for 28 generations. As the son of Abraham, He is the answer to a promise given 42 generations ago, the seed of Abraham, through whom the whole world would be blessed.
