Matthew 2
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
First notice how improbable or impossible it should’ve been for Jesus to fulfill all of the Old Testament prophecies. Just in his origin, how could one have predicted it possible for the Christ to be out of Bethlehem, out of Egypt and out of Nazareth? Deeper than this, though, notice the opposite reactions that people have to Jesus, even so early in his life, even before he’s able to shock and amaze people with his amazing words. Some, like the magi, rejoice and worship and show great joy. And others, like Herod are deeply troubled. Notice even the all of Jerusalem, along with Herod, is troubled. One probably would’ve expected all of Jerusalem would’ve been excited at the news of the coming king, but instead, they’re troubled. Maybe the lesson here is that Jesus as an infant divided people much like he did in his ministry and today. Some rejoice and worship, and others are greatly troubled. And it’s not always those who you would expect that accept him or reject him. It is also hard to read of the morning of Rachel and the Israelite mothers, especially juxtaposed with the anger of Herod and the joy of the Wisemen.
