Matthew 11
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
John the Baptist, still in prison, sends messengers to Jesus to ask if He is the Messiah. Jesus’s answer describes His works and uses language similar to prophecy from Isaiah 35:5-6 and 61:1-2. In a list of impossible miracles, the preaching of the gospel to the poor almost seems out of place, though this might be the most amazing and powerful of Jesus’s works. Although Jesus performs many miracles in the Jewish cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum, the people do not repent and Jesus denounces them. Jesus points out how Gentile cities would have repented in sackcloth and ashes if they had seen similar miracles. Sadly the Jews as a whole rejected their Messiah. Jesus wants us to find rest for our souls. The yoke and burden of living in this world without God is heavy and hard. The yoke of the old law was no easier or lighter. Jesus’ yoke is easy and His burden is light, He is gentle and humble, and only He can give your soul rest.
