Matthew 19

Series: 2023 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

From the beginning, God joined a husband and wife together with no intention for them to be separated. Jesus’ instruction on marriage and divorce is so strict the disciples response was that it is better to not marry at all. Jesus says not all men accept His statements on the matter. Through arrogance, selfishness, or ignorance, many try to justify their own divorce and remarriage. If an unlawful marriage is standing between you and Heaven, cut it off! It is better to have a crippled social life and enter Heaven than to cling to the benefits of an unlawful marriage and enter into eternal fire. Have I given up everything to follow Jesus? Have I given up anything to follow Jesus? What am I still lacking? When Jesus told his disciples that it was very hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, they were very astonished and wondered, “Then who can be saved?” It is difficult for the rich to fully place their trust in God, and not in their wealth or abilities or social network or healthcare or government. It is difficult for the rich to hunger and thirst for something better than this world, to look for a home better than the one they live in on earth. It is difficult for the rich to humble themselves, to accept the foolishness of the gospel, and to appraise things with the wisdom from above. If you are listening to this recording, odds are that you are very very rich, especially compared to the vast majority of people in this world, past and present. Thankfully, with God, all things are possible. What are you letting God do with your life?
