Matthew 21
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
For a moment it seems the Jews are going to acknowledge Jesus as their King, the Son of David. The chief priests and scribes become indignant after hearing the children cry out praises to Jesus, saying “Hosanna to the Son of David”. The leaders refused to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of David and it seems more than a coincidence that Jesus references Psalm 8:2, a Psalm of King David, to effectively say that He is not only the Son of David and King, but also God and Lord as the Psalm begins “Oh, Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the Earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants, You have ordained strength because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger. Jesus then makes it clear that His authority is from God and that the Jews, and especially the religious leaders, were rebellious, stubborn, and disobedient, that they would be refused entrance into God’s kingdom, and that they were deserving of God’s wrath and righteous judgment. The Chief priests and Pharisees seemed to understand His scathing rebuke of them, but instead of responding with repentance and belief, responded with indignation, and wanted to seize Him, but did not for fear of the people. When I am confronted with truth or righteous rebuke, do I respond with repentance and belief, or with anger and indignation?
