Matthew 26
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
The time has come for Jesus’s last passover, his betrayal, arrest, trials, and crucifixion. A woman pours costly oil on Jesus, in a way, preparing his body for his burial. The disciples are upset, thinking of other ways the oil or money from selling the oil could have been used, but Jesus points out she did a good work for Him. Do I look at my money and time in view of what good works I can do for Jesus, or am I focused on finding other uses for my money and time? Judas agrees to betray Jesus, and essentially sell his soul for 30 pieces of silver. For what pathetic price have I been willing to betray my Lord or sin against Him? Jesus becomes sorrowful and deeply distressed, knowing what He is about to go through, and after instituting the first Lord’s supper, He goes to Gethsemane to pray and focus on His Father’s will. When I partake of the Lord’s supper, how much sorrow do I feel? Do the horrors of the cross and the sufferings of Jesus weigh on my soul like they did my Lord’s? When I examine myself, is my commitment to God and His will anywhere near Jesus’s as He is praying in the garden? After centuries of waiting for the Messiah, the Jews finally have their anticipated king, And not only is He the son of Abraham and the son of David, but He is also the Son of God, the Son of Man who is to sit at the right hand of the Power and come on the clouds of heaven. Instead of rejoicing and praising God for such a King and Savior, Caiaphas and the Jews tear their clothes and sentence Jesus the Christ to death.
