1 Corinthians 5
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Congregational discipline — i.e. local church corrective discipline, and particularly the withdrawal of fellowship (cf. 2 Thessalonians 3.6, 14) — is, and rightly ought to be, an unpleasant responsibility. But sadly, its unpleasantness has frequently hampered timely and effectual action, and in many cases, interrupted it altogether. Its two-fold purpose, found in 1 Corinthians 5, should amply motivate us to this sober work: First, “for the destruction of the flesh,” i.e. what is fleshly/carnal in the sinner, “that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (verse 5); and Second, “a little leaven leavens the whole lump” (verse 6), so other souls must be protected from spiritual contamination and condemnation.
