When fellow Christians mistreated one another, my grandfather was known to say, “Sometimes brethren just don’t know how to behave themselves.” A younger me found his explanation overly simplistic, but subsequent years have taught me its truth. So, before we fail the second great commandment (“You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” Mark 12.31), even in the guise of keeping the first (“you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength,” verse 30), we should remind ourselves: “But when you thus sin against the brethren . . . you sin against Christ” (1 Corinthians 8.12).
