James 3
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
It has been estimated that the average person speaks enough words every week to fill a 500-page book. That should be a humbling thought, considering Jesus’ warning in Matthew 12.37, “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned,” and considering the danger of the tongue described in James 3.1-12. Of course we must eschew the blatantly ungodly speech of the world — profanity, blasphemy, and dishonestly — but we must also avoid the perhaps subtler sins of the tongue, equally condemned by God — gossip (Ephesians 4.31), hasty speech (James 1.19-20), hypocrisy (Matthew 23.1-4), unseasoned language (Colossians 4.5-6), unedifying or injurious words (Ephesians 4.29), deceit (1 Peter 2.1), flattery (Proverbs 26.28), murmuring and grumbling (Philippians 2.14). “My brethren, these things ought not to be so” (James 3.10).
