John 3
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Jesus’ interaction with Nicodemus reveals much. When He uses the phrase “Son of Man,” Jesus is making reference to Daniel Chapter 7 which Nicodemus having been a Pharisee would have been very familiar with. This passage refers to the Son of Man being given an everlasting kingdom which will ultimately be the church. He also alludes to the bronze serpent that Moses was commanded to raise for the Israelites to look upon in the wilderness when they were overcome with fiery serpents in Numbers chapter 21. Just as the Israelites fell victim to venom that affected them physically, we fall victim to a venom that affects us spiritually and that venom is sin. When Jesus was raised on the cross we gained the opportunity to cleanse that spiritual venom from our lives by looking to him, obeying him, and being born again through baptism.
