And now, a minute with the Word…

Jesus had earlier said, “I am the bread of life” (6.35), “I am the light of the world” (8.12; 9.5), “I am the door of the sheep” (10.7, 9), and “I am the good shepherd” (10.11, 14). Now Jesus offers His fifth of seven “I am” statements recorded in John’s gospel — “I am the resurrection and the life” (11.25). Two thoughts call for our attention. First, Jesus’ use of “I am” was an unambiguous claim to deity — the Great I AM. Second, Jesus did not claim to simply possess the power of resurrection and life — others before Him worked such power — but Jesus is the embodiment of resurrection and life. Make no mistake, for those in Christ, physical death is not the final word.
