John 18
Series: 2023 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
John 18 records Peter’s three denials while Jesus stood trial. Earlier that same night, “Peter said to Him, ‘Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!’” (Matthew 26.35), and indeed he seemed ready at Jesus’ arrest (John 18.1-10). Peter did not forsake and flee, as did most others (Matthew 26.56), but he “followed [Jesus] at a distance” (verse 58), “stood at the door outside” (John 18.16), and “warmed himself” at the enemy’s fire (verses 18, 25); and under such pressure, Peter’s aforementioned devotion and zeal caved. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4.7-8).
