Jesus said, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mark 14.38b). Twice before, Abraham’s fear moved him to deceive others about Sarah, calling her his “sister” instead of “wife” (Genesis 12.10-16; 20.1-2), and now in Genesis 26.6-7, Isaac does the same for the same reason — like father, like son. Despite their commendable faith manifested elsewhere, these occasions demonstrate the fullness of their humanity and the weakness of their flesh; and if these can stumble in their fear, so can we. “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation” (Mark 14.38a), because “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe” (Proverbs 29.25).
