Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
In Genesis 31.42, Jacob spoke of “the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac,” and verse 53 reads, “So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.” In the whole Bible, only here is God called Fear, but the concept is ubiquitous and compelling. “Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2.11). “Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him” (Psalm 85.9). “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1.7). “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil” (Proverbs 3.7). Jesus said, “Fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!” (Luke 12.5)
