Week 4, Day 3 — A minute with the Word
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Genesis 43.32 tells us that “[The Egyptians] served [Joseph] by himself, and [his brothers] by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians;” and 46.34 offers further explanation, “for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.” Why is this significant? Because God is working to fulfill His promise to Abraham, “I will make of you a great nation” (12.2), without the corrupting influences of Canaan’s inhabitants, its surrounding nations, or the Egyptians. Abraham’s descendants, in the family of Jacob (or Israel), would live in the land of Egypt, but largely separate from the Egyptians, for four generations (15.13-16), until they became the promised great nation!
