Much has been suggested regarding the potential health benefits of Israel’s “clean” living, particularly their dietary and purification laws, but such speculation ultimately misses the point. God’s concern was not primarily their physical health, rather He was concerned for their holiness — the Lord said, “Be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 10.44,45). This had been God’s express intent from their beginning— “You shall be My treasured possession among all peoples . . . a holy nation” (Exodus 19.5-6). And it remains so for His people today — “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1.14-16).
