Week 9, Day 5 — Leviticus 24-25
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
In addition to the weekly and annual sabbaths required by the Law elsewhere, Leviticus 25 prescribes the Sabbath Year (every seven years) and the Year of Jubilee (the fiftieth year). Why such emphasis on sabbath, the word itself appearing ~40 times in Exodus and Leviticus? While some sabbaths are given specific significance, they all share this purpose: Sabbaths reminded the people to rely on the Lord, and not themselves. We need to be reminded too: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3.5), “for we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5.7).
