And now, a minute with the Word…

“They found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day” (Numbers 15.32), and for that “all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the LORD commanded Moses” (verse 36) — i.e. the sentence just prescribed for “the person who does anything with a high hand,” who “reviles the LORD,” and who “has despised the word of the LORD and has broken his commandment” (verses 30-31). God was serious, and all of Israel needed to learn. “Remember all the commandments of the LORD, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes . . . and be holy to your God. I am the LORD your God” (verses 39-41).
