If God did not want Balaam to go with Balak’s emissaries (and he clearly did not), why then did He allow him, even tell him, to go? God will allow the rebellious “to walk in their own ways” (Acts 14.16), in their own free will, even when it violates His express will; but never without consequence, in hopes of steering them from rebellion to repentance. Regarding Israel, the Lord said, “But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!” (Psalm 81.11-13)
