Week 13, Day 5 — Deuteronomy 7-9
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the word…
Deuteronomy 7.25 — “Burn up the carved images of their gods. Don’t covet the silver and gold on the images and take it for yourself, or else you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.” (CSB)
We began this week with a passage from Numbers 33 about how the Israelites were to destroy the carved images that the Canaanite peoples worshipped. Again, here we have a command from God (through Moses) for them to burn up the carved images. Even further, don’t even covet the silver or the gold on the images. God warns them that these things would be a snare to them. How often does the Bible address the issue of greed/covetousness? Greed and covetousness are qualities that should not be associated with anyone who calls themselves a child of God. Greed and covetousness will make us do things that are contrary to God’s commands (Joshua 7), contrary to our spiritual well being (Genesis 13-14, 19), and ultimately betray our Lord and Savior (Matthew 26). Let us stay vigilant and always be working to be more like Jesus.
1 Peter 5.8 — “Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.” (CSB)
