Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Dt 19-21 — Deuteronomy 19, Numbers 35, and Joshua 20 all describe “cities of refuge” to be established by Israel once they had entered and settled the Promised Land. By God’s design, these were accessible (scattered throughout Israel’s territory), occupied by God’s special servants (the Levites), and to which one who committed manslaughter could flee to save his own life from an “avenger of blood.” We too are blessed with refuge — not in a city, but in a Savior — by God’s grace (John 1.16), accessible through Jesus Christ (John 14.6), accompanied by those who have also found in Him their hiding place (Colossians 3.3), and in Whom we can be saved from death (Romans 6.23).
