Judges 21.25 — “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever seemed right to him.” (CSB)

The last verse of the book of Judges leaves us on a down note. The people of Israel are doing whatever seems right to them. They are taking no regard for God and His law, and instead have made themselves into the authority in their lives. We’ve seen what that did for them throughout the book: they would be oppressed by another group of people and endure hardship, they would cry out to God, He would save them, and ultimately after a while they would go back to doing whatever seemed right to them. This constant lack of attention to God and His authority would eventually lead to their downfall during the days of the Divided Kingdom. Let us remember their example as we close the book of Judges: when we forget God and do what seems right to us, we should expect to endure hard times.
