Week 19, Day 4 — 1 Samuel 3-5
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the word…
I couldn’t help but think of the song “I’ll Be Listening” while reading through 1 Samuel 3. We are not sure how old Samuel was during the events of this chapter. However, we read of four times that God called to Samuel, and each time, Samuel answered. His final response, after Eli told him that God was the one calling to him was, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3.10).
The words of the hymn’s first verse are “When the Savior calls I will answer. When He calls for me, I will hear. When the Savior calls I will answer. I’ll be somewhere listening for my name.” Is that my attitude toward God’s call to me? God is calling us to a life that is different from what the world has to offer. He is calling us to a life of holiness, service, and love. He is calling us to repentance (Acts 17.30-31). He is inviting us to a life of eternity with Him (Revelation 22.17). The offer is universal - anyone can come. Am I listening for that invitation? The voice of the Savior says come. The cross where He died is in sight. Even now, at the cross there is room. Are you coming to Jesus today?
