Week 20, Day 1 — A minute with the Word
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
When Israel demanded an earthly king (1 Samuel 8.5), through Samuel they were admonished regarding the rejection of their Heavenly King (verse 7) and its consequences (verses 9-18). Despite this solemn warning from the Lord, Israel persisted. Again in 1 Samuel 10, before Saul was publicly appointed as king, Israel was warned again, “You have rejected your God” (verse 19); but instead of weeping for their sin, they rejoiced and shouted, “Long live the king!” (verse 24). Here God gave them one last opportunity to course-correct, but they refused. These events remind us that “The Lord…is patient…not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3.9), so “do not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoice with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13.6).
