Week 20, Day 5 — 1 Samuel 17, 1 Chronicles 2
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
When the Lord took the kingdom from Saul, He “sought out a man after His own heart” (1 Samuel 13.14), and that man was David (16.7, 12-13; Acts 13.22); but what exactly made David a man after God’s own heart? His encounter with Goliath (1 Samuel 17) provides our first insight to his unique character. David said, “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? . . . The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine . . . Then David said to the Philistine, ‘…I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand . . .’” (verses 26, 37, 45-46). Like Moses before him, David could “[see] Him who is unseen” (Hebrews 11.27).
