Week 21, Day 1 — 1 Samuel 18-19, 1 Chronicles 3

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

It is difficult to imagine a sharper contrast of father and son than the one presented of Saul and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 18-19. In the aftermath of David’s (i.e. the Lord’s) victory over Goliath and the praise it garnered (18.6-7), Saul was filled with jealousy and subsequently sought to take David’s life, lest David have the kingdom (verses 8-9). On the other hand, “the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself” (verse 1), later coming to David’s aid and defense from Saul, even though David stood to occupy Israel’s throne instead of Jonathan (1 Samuel 19ff). This is the contrast between a prideful king and an humble servant. “A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor” (Proverbs 29.23).
