When David had opportunity to take King Saul’s life in the cave of Engedi, he refrained “and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe” (1 Samuel 24.4); but even then, “David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe…seeing he is the LORD’s anointed” (verses 5-6). Indeed, a man after God’s own heart (13.14; 16.7, 12-13; Acts 13.22), and by him we are reminded of two important lessons: (1) “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord’” (Romans 12.19); and (2) “Respect those who…are over you in the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5.12).
