Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
“O, what may man within him hide, Though angel on the outward side!” (William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure, Act 3, Scene 2). Though Saul “had put the mediums and the necromancers out of the land” (1 Samuel 28.3), that previous good did not keep him from hypocritically saying “to his servants, ‘Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her’” (verse 7), nor from swearing “to her by the LORD, ‘As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing’” (verse 10). “Woe to you…hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness” (Matthew 23.27-28).
