Week 22, Day 4 — 2 Samuel 1-2, 1 Chronicles 11

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

In our world of bitterly partisan politics and boundless selfish ambition, these words are especially astounding: “David said to him [who claimed to have killed Saul], ‘How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?’” (2 Samuel 1.14) As we have noted before (1 Samuel 24.6; 26.9), David maintained immense respect for “the LORD’s anointed,” even when the king did not respect David’s very life. David understood that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will” (Daniel 4.17, 25, 32), and he behaved accordingly. “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God . . . Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor” (Romans 13.1, 7). Let us learn to do the same.
