Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
“Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God” (1 Chronicles 13.9-10; cf. 2 Samuel 6.6-7). What couldn’t save Uzzah’s life? Look carefully at the texts. Human wisdom (1 Chronicles 13.1ff), popular opinion (verse 4), “a new cart” (verse 7; 2 Samuel 6.3), misguided zeal (1 Chronicles 13.8; 2 Samuel 6.5), undisputedly good intentions (1 Chronicles 13.9; 2 Samuel 6.6), anger (1 Chronicles 13.11; 2 Samuel 6.8), or belated reverence (1 Chronicles 13.12; 2 Samuel 6.9). What could have saved Uzzah? If they had, from the beginning, sought the LORD “according to the rule” (1 Chronicles 15.13).
