Week 23, Day 3 — A minute with the Word
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Second Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17 are among the great texts of the Bible, indispensable to the narration of God’s grand scheme of redemption as it unfolds throughout Old Testament history. While our attention usually focuses on God’s promises to David, i.e. the Davidic covenant, and rightly so, we must not miss David’s reaction to these promises, this covenant. “Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, ‘Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?’” (2 Samuel 7.18; 1 Chronicles 17.16). In the presence of God’s amazing grace, David’s response was humility; and in the presence of God’s even more amazing grace, embodied in Jesus Christ, our response must be no less. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble . . . Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James 4.6, 10).
