While not its primary purpose, there is a sense in which the Lord’s temple, constructed during Solomon’s reign over Israel, stood as a monument to “the LORD [who] gave victory to David wherever he went” (2 Samuel 8.6, 14; 1 Chronicles 18.6, 13). As enemies were conquered, the spoils of war and tribute of subjects were “dedicated…to the LORD” (1 Chronicles 18.11), subsequently used in the construction of the temple and its furnishings (1 Chronicles 18.8; cf. 22.1-19; 29.1-9), and “the glory of the LORD filled the house of God” (2 Chronicle 5.14; cf. 7.1-3).
