And now, a minute with the Word…

Solomon’s reign marked the zenith of Israel’s political, geographic, and economic power; “And,” indeed, “Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon” (1 Kings 4.25). But remember the Lord’s warning to Israel when they demanded a king “like all the nations” (1 Samuel 8.5, 20) — “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take…” (verse 11). What they had demanded in Samuel’s day, in which they rejoiced at the outset of Solomon’s reign, would be the cause of their pleading only 40 years later (1 Kings 12.4).
