God said, “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19.32); but Rehoboam “abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him” (1 Kings 12.8; 2 Chronicles 10.8), those “who had stood before Solomon his father” (1 Kings 12.6; 2 Chronicles 10.6), “and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him, he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men” (1 Kings 12.13-14; cf. 2 Chronicles 10.13-14). Generally, “Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days” (Job 12.12), so let’s be careful to avoid the folly of the ancient Athenians, only interested in “something new” (Acts 17.21).
