Week 29, Day 5 — 2 Kings 9-10
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Israel’s King Jehu is at once both a heroic character and a tragic one. On the one hand, he demonstrated great “zeal for the Lord” (2 Kings 10.16), when “he struck down all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had wiped them out, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke to Elijah” (verse 17), and when he “wiped out Baal from Israel” (verse 28). On the other hand, “Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin” (verse 31; cf. verse 29). Jehu reminds us that, in order to fully please the Lord, we must “love [Him] with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12.30).
