“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14.34) — any people, any nation, whether Gentile or Jew. The language with which judgment is pronounced upon the Gentiles of Damascus (Syria), Gaza (Philistia), Tyre, Edom, Ammon, and Moab — “Thus says the LORD: ‘For three transgressions…and for four, I will not revoke the punishment’” (Amos 1.3, 6, 9, 11, 13; 2.1) — is also used against the Jews of Judah (2.4) and Israel (2.6). “Hear this word that the LORD has spoken” (3.1), regardless of who you are, where you’re from, or the religious background from which you come — including us today.
