Week 31, Day 3 — Amos 7-9

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

Before the Lord’s call, Amos was “no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but…a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs” (Amos 7.14); i.e. he was an everyman, “not a part of a family, or school, of prophets, nor was he a younger ‘apprentice’ of an older prophet (like Elisha was to Elijah)” (Marc Gibson, “Amos,” Truth Commentaries, page 515). “But the LORD took [Amos] from following the flock, and the LORD said to [him], ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel’” (Amos 7.15). Here is the lesson: No particular pedigree, higher education, or special experience is necessary to speak the truth of God, because the power is in the message, not the messenger. “So I am eager to preach the gospel… For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation…” (Romans 1.15-16).
