“God’s call for repentance [in Isaiah 22.12] was met with the clamorous noises of a rebellious, indulgent populace (v. 13) . . . The problem is that the people were leaving God out of their thoughts and lives… In their prosperity and enjoyment of life they had forgotten the Lord who is the provider of life itself and all that sustains life upon this earth . . . a casual and indifferent attitude towards eternity [that] is fatal to the wellbeing of any society. And so, the sentence of death to the nation is proclaimed [in verse 14]” (John A. Humphries, Truth Commentaries: Isaiah, 213). “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction…” (Romans 15.4).
