Week 35, Day 4 — Isaiah 28-29
Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Ten times in the book of Isaiah, including twice in chapter 28 and twice in chapter 29, Israel and/or Judah are called “this people” — not “the Lord’s people” or “His people,” nor by the Lord Himself, “My people,” but simply “this people.” Do not miss the severity of this indictment. These people, whose entire history had been superintended by God, so long ignored their history and abandoned His ways (for those of their own design) that they could no longer be properly identified with Him at all, their lip-service notwithstanding (Isaiah 29.13-14). The error of “this people,” approximately 700 years before Jesus, was subsequently repeated in Jesus’ day and met with the same rebuke (Matthew 15.8-9; Mark 7.6-7) — an error that can just as easily be true of us, nearly 2000 years after Jesus.
