Series: 2024 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
During Judah’s spiritual restoration led by King Hezekiah, “he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made,” from Numbers 21.4-9, “for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it” (2 Kings 18.4). What God originally ordained and Moses constructed for the salvation of Israel had become an idol, bringing condemnation upon Israel! Here is the warning: anything or anyone can become an idol, if we allow it to encroach upon the reverence due God, and only God — a relationship, job, or social status; our money, house, car, “toys,” or other “stuff;” and perhaps most dangerous, ourselves. To become idols, these do not have to replace God, but need only rival Him for our affection and devotion. So ask yourself, what has become your “Nehushtan”?
