And now, a minute with the Word…

In view of Judah’s immediate circumstances, i.e. the Assyrian threat in the days of King Hezekiah, and the judgment yet to come upon them, by way of Babylonian captivity, what real “Comfort” (Isaiah 40.1) was there to be found? “Behold your God!” (40.9). Consider the incomparable majesty and glory of God (40.12-17). So overwhelming are His size, power, and works that even the grandest of offerings (40.16) are insufficient; and any attempt to represent Him, or replace Him, by graven image is the height of folly (40.18-20). No one rivals His sovereignty over creation or nations (40.21-26), yet His omniscience and compassion reach the lowliest of all — especially the weak, downtrodden, and humbled (40.27-31). Indeed, “they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (40.31).
